Mad Scientist Time!
I've been meaning to do this for a while, and I'm pretty psyched it's actually happening. It's time to start the official N=1 series!

In this series I'll pick a self-experiment I've been meaning to blog about, write up an initial proposal, then share constant updates here, in the articles section of VTS.

My hope is that by sharing this I'll raise the quality of the experiments I do and hopefully help others thinking about starting their own N=1 adventures to pull the trigger. One of the best ways to learn is to teach!

So, what components make up a good experiment? For the sake of this series, and science, I'm going to stick to the old tried and true. The scientific method. It goes a little like this:
  • Purpose: What are we trying to discover?
  • Hypothesis: What is an educated guess regarding the outcome of the experiment?
  • Materials: What supplies, equipment, or information (data) will need to be used/acquired?
  • Procedure: How are we going to conduct the experiment?
  • Results: What happened?
  • Conclusion: Was the hypothesis correct?

The criteria for the N=1 experiments will not be very strict. It really boils down to 3 things:

  1. It has to be Convenient.
  2. It has to be Useful.
  3. It has to be Exciting.

What's that spell? CUE! I'm hoping that by sticking to those themes it will be easier for me to "CUE" myself into action.

That all said, feel free to join the conversation! Take on an experiment with me! Or let me know where I may have missed details that effects my conclusions. I expect this to be a learning experience for everyone. For example, I'll leave you with the top contenders for the first round of experiments (vote in the comments or via social media):

  • Long distance looking's effects on vision improvement
  • Hot/cold contrast showers' effects on training recovery
  • Four week power program's effects on vertical jump heigh
  • Handwalking training effects on shoulder health
  • Dietary effects on stool health
  • Fasting's effects on eating frequency & size
  • Meditation's effects on sleep quality

Exciting! Right?! I know!

Lastly, all I have to say is....
