I'm Not a Doctor...

I’m not a doctor, I don’t claim to be a doctor, nor do I play one on TV; just some ramblings on the subject.

However, I do think that I can help a lot of people live a pain free life.\

I can do this because most overuse injuries, or … can be prevented with changes in movement patterns and the right life and exercise choices. Do I think that physical therapists and doctors are not necessary? No, its very important to know when you need to refer out, and also to know who to refer to.

In our current day, there are many things that we do that are just not natural. From sitting at a desk to running on a treadmill, our bodies did not evolve performing these activities (no, I’m not getting into the whole “primal” thing, that’s for another day). These and any number of other things put unnatural stresses on our body, over time these lead to nagging pains, and can eventually lead to injury, or put us at a higher risk of injury.

Now, I think that it is pretty much impossible to stop doing everything that puts weird stresses on our body, not to mention how boring life might be. But, I do think that you can mitigate these stresses and become stronger in ways that help counteract any damage you might accrue.

Through experts such as Gray Cook and Katy Bowman, we can learn how to move to the best of our advantage, and how to gradually revert back to healthier movement patterns etc. Who has time to do all that research and reading you may ask? That’s where we come in. Not only have we done the research, reading and practical learning. But we also have the tools to help people make these movement based habit choices a reality.

Even those who have been to rehab and done some time performing the home exercises from their PT’s, eventually tend to stop doing them. Unfortunately, just doing corrective/preventive exercises or movements for a short time is not good enough. In order to counteract our daily lives, we need to be doing the right kind of movements and preventive measures as part of our daily routines. Think of it as an insurance policy. Rather than saving money to fix ourselves if we get hurt, how about we prevent the hurt in the first place. This goes for any aspect of our daily lives, from nutrition, to smoking habits, to movement.

We at VIVO Training Systems, are the habit people. We cannot diagnose an injury, or prescribe medicine. But we can help you with the small things that over time become huge, like losing the weight so you don’t need your blood pressure medicine anymore (only with approval from your physician of course!) or fixing your squat form so that you don’t tear up your knees and eventually need surgery or therapy.

PS: To any Practictioners (Doctors, Physcial Therapists, Occupational Therapists, PTA’s and OTA’s, Massage Therapists, etc) thank you for doing what you do. We could not do this without you. To show our appreciation (and because we know you would never suggest something you haven’t looked into or experienced for yourself) tell us what you do and get 10% off any of our group programs or get our special practioners rate on our individual training programs.

Of life, lemons, and new roads

Dear family, friends, acquaintances, facebook stalkers, and those who just like to say they know someone who has been on TV and lives in a tiny house.

I am sure all of you have been wondering: whatever happened to Jaz and Mike?  Asking yourselves: what are they up to these days? Well, this letter is to update you so that you no longer have to lay in bed at night wondering.

LIfe has been pretty exciting actually. We have had a few drastic changes that we have turned into opportunities that we are super excited to tell the world about. I am so sick of making lemonade, it’s not even funny.

To lay the scene, Mike recently graduated with his Master’s in Public Health from The George Washington University, because really, he is the one with the brains in this duo. Our tiny warrior princess just turned 1 and was keeping us busy; running like crazy all over the place. VIVO Training Systems was maintaining a steady pace, but not the center of our lives. And the FitNest was and still is an awesome place to live.

Now, you would think that graduating with your Master’s would mean that it’s time to get one of those super fancy full time jobs with benefits etc. That’s what we thought too, but the universe had other plans. Due to circumstances that are complicated and too boring to relate here, the universe basically blindsided us and said “Now is the time to take the jump!’ So, we are putting all of our super awesomeness into VIVO Training Systems and making it our number one priority.
What is VIVO Training Systems you may ask?

Well it is in short, our super selfish way of creating the lifestyle that we want, by helping people change their lives and morph themselves into the best versions of themselves that they can be.

In between taking long walks with the warrior princess, and relaxing in the paradise that is the FitNest, we offer people strength and habit training that is truly affordable and as portable as their smart phone.

Part of the mantra at the FitNest, is “Fitness is our life, but if it’s not easily accessible, it won’t happen” (I just made that up, but you get my point). Our goal is to make fitness and health easily accessible to everyone. We do that by providing the resources that our combined strength training, functional movement, psychology, behavior change, etc., backgrounds give us, to anybody who is ready to put in the time to become their next best self.

Whether it is providing a personalized weight training program that fits into your exact lifestyle and goals, providing habit training to help with pretty much anything  you can imagine, nutrition coaching to help return to that physique you had in college (coming soon!), or a complete program to help you run pain and injury free, we have what you need!

OK, so that sounded a little gimmicky, but really it’s all true. We have been providing personalized strength programs for over 2 years online now, and combined, we have over 20 years of experience in the field.

We are now expanding what we offer to include habit coaching, nutrition coaching (starting soon), and also a community based mobility/strength program for runners of all levels.

If you want to hear and see more, find VIVO Training Systems on Facebook. If you are wondering what life in a tiny house is really like, check out our FitNest Facebook and Instagram pages.
